How Do I Adopt An Animal From TLC Humane Society?

Congratulations! You have made a decision to add a family member to your home. Thank you for coming to TLC. You will have a friend who truly needs you.

TLC can also arrange for you to see cats at our building or both cats and dogs in the home of the custodian. Please call the TLC phone line, 706-864-2817.

Pre-Qualification
Adopting an animal is a serious decision.
TLC requires that you fill out a pre-qualification form that asks questions about yourself and the home you intend to provide for the animal. A volunteer will discuss this information with you. This process will help you know what you will need to provide the animal. It will also help you decide if adopting an animal is best for you at this time.

The pre-qualification form states that should you decide that you cannot keep the animal for any reason you will contact TLC. TLC will accept certain animals back immediately. Sometimes we may need some time for us to take them back. If the animal is returned within the first 14 days following adoption, TLC will return the adoption fee. If you have someone else who wants the animal, this decision needs to be discussed with TLC.

Adoption Papers
The next step is to fill out the adoption papers.
This must be done by the person who is adopting the animal. If you wish to give an animal as a gift, the person who is accepting the responsibility for the animal must be present and fill out the paperwork.

The adoption paper includes two contracts. One says that you will be accepting full responsibility for the animal and TLC will have no further liability for the animal. The other states that you will get the animal spay/neutered within the time frame specified. This is a state requirement and has a stated penalty for failure to comply. Most of our animals are spayed or neutered before adoption.

Adoption Fees
The fee to adopt an animal is $95 for puppies and kittens, and less for adults.
This amount is to cover services provided for the animal which includes spay/neuter, rabies tag, current shots and worming, a courtesy health exam, feline leukemia testing, and heartworm testing as needed based on the age of the animal. A certificate is provided for the courtesy health exam. Certificates are provided for heartworm testing, spay/neuter and rabies when these procedures have not already been done. Certificates may be redeemed by any participating veterinarian. A list is included in the adoption packet..

Evidence of Spay/Neuter
When  you have completed the adoption process you may then take the animal into your home. TLC remains available for consultation at any time about any questions you may have or problems that you may encounter. TLC will follow up should we not receive evidence of spay/neuter within the time allotted on the adoption form. This is a state of Georgia requirement. Should you choose to get the animal spayed or neutered without the use of our certificate, TLC appreciates the donation. However, we still need evidence that the procedure has been done.

TLC reserves the right to remove the animal from your home should we determine that the animal is not receiving humane treatment.

We are delighted that you are interested in adopting an animal from us and we will work with you in every way we can to assure that you and the animal have a positive experience.
